Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy
Ingredients:
For the Steaks:
1 lb ground beef
1/3 cup breadcrumbs (or crushed pork rinds for low-carb)
1 egg
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
1 tbsp oil (for frying)
For the Onion Gravy:
1 large onion, thinly sliced
1 1/2 cups beef broth
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp soy sauce (optional, for extra depth)
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp black pepper
2 tbsp butter
1 tbsp cornstarch (or 1/2 tsp xanthan gum for keto) + 2 tbsp water (for thickening)
Instructions:
1. Make the Hamburger Steaks: In a bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Form into 4 patties.
2. Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook patties for 4-5 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.
3. Make the Onion Gravy: In the same skillet, melt butter and add sliced onions. Cook until softened and golden, about 5-7 minutes.
4. Stir in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, garlic powder, and black pepper. Bring to a simmer.
5. Mix cornstarch with water and stir into the gravy. Cook until thickened.
6. Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, spoon gravy over them, and let simmer for 5 more minutes.
7. Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or a low-carb side like cauliflower mash.
